Seedlings always look sad when they are first planted and can suffer from transplant shock. This is because they have come from a protected greenhouse environment into the blazing sun and wind. In fact, as well as stopping rabbits from eating them, the net helps to protect them a bit from the harsh field conditions whilst they get established. This is particularly important in late Spring, Summer and early Autumn.

Pictured here is lettuce, which we grow year round. By planting different varieties we can be sure to provide you with salads even in the midst of a harsh Summer. The lettuce we seed in the greenhouse this week will be eaten in January. The trickiest part is getting lettuce started mid-Summer as it needs cool temperatures to germinate. We solve this by popping the newly seeded trays into the coolroom for 24-48 hours!
