This week a pair of plovers decided to make a nest in amongst our baby kale plants. They laid two eggs and would screech at us anytime we needed to harvest from nearby beds. We gave them plenty of space, ducking in to take a photo while they were foraging for food. It was exciting to think that their screeching may keep the rabbits away.
However, we arrived on Friday morning to see that the eggs had been eaten overnight and the nest abandoned.
The parents are still around, dancing and mating, and I'm sure will try again with a new clutch of eggs. Being ground nesters is a dangerous business but plovers are a determined lot.
