Market Farm Income
Small market farms can sell their veggies and services in many ways. Whilst we sell our veggies through a mixed seasonal veggie box subscription, much like a Community Supported Agriculture or CSA model, others sell to restaurants, retail shops, or at farmer's markets or farm gate stalls. It is also possible to run workshops using the expertise of the farmer to teach the community about food growing, run tours or even excursions for school groups. All of these can be a source of income for the farmer.
Market farm expenses
Like any small business a market farm has overheads such as rent, electricity, water, insurance, accounting fees and marketing expenses. Then of course there is the cost of farm labour, soil inputs like compost and fertilisers, seed and packaging.
Market farming is a tough gig and a steady income is by no means guaranteed, but the rewards of working outdoors, for yourself and growing food for the community are worth it.
